“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Some of us are poor at taking care of our bodies – spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally. Now, reading the quote above, some of you may be like ‘huh?’. I’m sure you have read or heard the quote ‘Your body is a temple’.
In the case above, for me, I am merely renting my body as are you. So it’s our duty to take care of our health and wellbeing, something I have not always been great at. I have suffered with depression in the past for many years with real highs and lows, and the doctor’s solution to this, was either counselling (which I did) along with anti-depressants, to which I kindly said ‘no, thank you’. Now that’s not to say it’s not right for everyone, it just wasn’t right for me. I believed I was stronger at healing my mind and emotions, however, this only really happened for me, when I found God.
My faith has helped me do a 360° turn around when it comes to my health. I have focus on something more powerful than human beings, I have strength and belief that I am cared for. One of the most wonderful and beautiful things, that anyone can do for another, is pray. Prayer has strength in it, it can help others feel supported but above all, it brings peace to your mind and spiritual wellbeing. A great place I have been to here in Leamington Spa is ‘The Well Healing Centre’ – really good prayer.
Many people in this day and age do not believe in God, and that’s okay. I’m not here to tell you if you should or shouldn’t, I am just here to share my journey with God and what a miracle he has been in my life. It doesn’t mean I do not suffer, or fall ill, but it does mean I do not endure these on my own. My health has been more stable mentally, emotionally and spiritually (I am still working on the physical side!), which my friends and family can vouch for.
I guess the message I am trying to get across is, some of us work on one area of our health but not all of it. It’s really important to look deeper than skin deep. I have always had a complex, that I am not slim or beautiful enough etc. However, this changed in Uganda. Your mental, emotional and spiritual health, are all just as important if not more, than your physical. You might look beautiful on the outside, but what’s really going on, in the inside? Sometimes we need to dig much deeper, to really know our core. Why do we spend time maintaining our homes, our looks but not our internal health?
Some questions for you:
- What are you eating? Do you really know what you are putting into your body? Just because it tastes good, it doesn’t mean its good for you.
- What are you thinking? Is it healthy, does it benefit you and those around you, or are you in a dark cloud? Meditate on Gods word and cut out negativity.
- What are you feeling? Are you always up and down? Do you feel ’empty?’ Do not allow those who make you feel vulnerable, unappreciated and unwanted, your benchmark of who you are. God loves you no matter what! He has created you in his image.
- What are you doing? It’s all well and good complaining, but what are you doing about your issues? For those of us who have given our life to Christ, God’s intention is for us to be filled with the ‘fruit of the Spirit’ which is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.
If you take nothing else away, I just want to leave you with this. You are UNIQUE! God has made no other like you! That’s pretty awesome – right?!
